A good pair of cowboy boots should feel snug the first time you put them on and comfortable after a few wears. Here is what to check when you try on a pair, whether you are in our Louisville store or shopping online.
Ball of the foot
The widest part of your foot should sit at the widest part of the boot. It should feel snug, but not pinched. Leather boots give a little across the ball as they break in.
Instep
The instep is the top of your foot. Pull-on boots hold your foot in place here, so you want a firm, even feel when your foot slides in. If you feel pressure on the top of your foot, try a wider width or a different style.
Heel slip
A little heel slip, about a quarter to half an inch, is normal in new pull-on boots. It goes down as the sole flexes and the boot breaks in. A lot of slip usually means the boot is too big.
Toe room
Your toes should not touch the end of the boot. Toe shape matters here: square and wide square toes give the most room, and snip and pointed toes give less.
Shopping online
- Start with your usual size in that brand, if you know it.
- Western boots often fit differently than sneakers, so check the size notes on the product page.
- Try them on indoors on a clean floor so they can be returned if they don't fit.
